Default Canon Rebels

I'm hoping to get a new camera after I start my job. You know get with the year 2010 and get a digital.

My 35mm is a Canon Rebel, and I really like it. A dude I worked with on another field job had a digital Canon Rebel, and all his sweet lenses fit on my camera.

Anyone familiar on here with the models of Rebels that would have the changeable lenses? How much they generally run? I'll assume its not the model that Walmart carries.

And for those of you who are canon haters, what do you have? Or what other types would you recommend? I'm more into nature photoraphy, and such. And I'm open to other recommendations.

please keep in mind I'm essentially retarded when it comes to camera/photography lingo.

I think Matt (MooFallon) shoots with a Canon Digital Rebel...might shoot him a PM.

They aren't cheap...they're DSLR's so you're prolly looking at $400 or more for the body alone.

I personally prefer Nikon over Canon...but that's just me...I've played around with Kevin's D80 and I just like it a lot. Nothing against Canon cameras.

I have a Nikon D80 and love it. I've never used a digital Canon, so I won't comment on them.

I'm getting a Canon 7d at some point, which is the top of the line in cropped sensor cameras right now, but you can get many of the rebel series cameras for 600-1000 new depending on model with a kit lens. I would recommend looking for a used body from someone who upgraded recently. You can rely on craigslist for locals, and classified forums on places like naturescapes.net

Honestly around here, I would be scared getting a used camera. I don't mind spending 600-700 on a new one. I'll be pullin in some big bucks out in Wyoming.

My only negative comment on the cheaper Canon SLR's.. and this is true for Nikon SLR's as well:

On the lower end models such as the Xti and Xsi and the newer T's is that if you're going to be shooting in manual mode, you have to mess with all the settings on screen. On the higher models such as the 50D, most of the settings such as iso shutter speed aperture etc are in another digital window on the top right of the camera body.

I've used friend's Canon SLRs before and I have to say messing with settings on screen is just a hassle, I'm able to shoot much faster using the top window of my D80. Maybe it's just a personal thing but I wanted to get it out there.

I will, however, say that I prefer the on screen settings of Canon SLRs to that of the on screen settings of Nikon SLRs, more user friendly.

I didnt know if they were set up the same as my 35mm but just digital or what. I hadn't really shopped around, just kinda was in love with my 35mm, so hopped to find something very close to that. I just knew the canons took a lot of punishment and so was trying to stick with them.

thanks everyone for your imput.

My D80 has the settings in the upper display area... not on the screen.

I will say this for the Canon.... They have the MPE-65 lens. Nikon cant even come close. This is a macro lens that will give you up to 5x lifesize magnification. I have been drooling over this lens for years now... expecially since I have seen what it can do in the hands of someone that knows how to use it. There is a guy from Italy that posts on the outdoor photographers forum that has one. OMG!

I dont know what your gonna be doing in WY... but I will say this. I bought the Battery Grip for my Nikon and love it. It holds 2 batteries and I can go almost 4 days between charging... and thats shooting, viewing, and transfering over to the computer. Keep in mind... I shoot ALOT when Im out.

I will most likely bring home a few thousand photos just from the spring SR trip... unless I spend more time with the video this year.

I dont know much about the Canon's but if you have Nikon quesitons... I can prolly help you out.

Wyoming will be a lot of bird stuff. I always ALWAYS end up stuck with working with birds, instead of what I prefer. Lots of Sage Grouse, and then lots of Hawk Nest Searching.

I think my camera now is OK for up close shots, some scenery shots, exc... I can manage some 'close' shots with some song birds, but for flighty game birds I want something so much better!
