Last week, I had inadvertently left one of my tubs open, and my female albino house snake escaped. To my dismay, I have yet to find her.
However, in the meantime, I ended up snatching up this little beauty! I've never seen one like her before, so I'm really excited! Meet Ginger. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0908.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0910.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0913.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0915.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0916.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4...s/IMG_0909.jpg

Real nice, dude. House snakes are starting to intrigue me, so they have been added to the list.
At the last NY expo I attended, Outback Reptiles had baby emerald house snakes for $25 each. They didn't look too good and were probably wild caught. I looked up "emerald house snake" on Goggle and couldn't find any info. Is there such a variation or were they mislabeled?

Yes, definitely mislabeled, although I've never seen them advertise them as "emeralds" on their kingsnake ads.
The snakes in question are the black or "olive" phase of Lamprophis fuliginosus. I actually have a pair of these myself. It should be noted that this is a separate species from L. capensis, the species that has the albinos. It should also not be confused with the true Olive house snake species, L. olivaceus & L. inornatus (both of these are very rare in America anyway). All that said, the different species of house snakes will NOT interbreed with each other, despite claims to the contrary. They may lock up, but they will not produce eggs at all. So bear that in mind when you are entering the market of these wonderful serpents.

Unless it's listed as CB, all of Outback Reptiles stock is WC. They're a direct importer, which is why their prices are so low.

Indeed. As far as house snakes go, sometimes you kinda have to start out with WC stock, depending on the species. But there are more and more folks getting into them, so we should see a lot more C.B. housies emerge in coming years.
I know I plan to pair up that olive pair of mine here in a month or two, so I expect some c.b. of those will soon be available.

Nice addition Mike! Too bad about the other one, but it happens to the best of us.

I just met my first normal house snakes, and now I find out there's another color??
Granted, I think I like the normals better anyways. Some people think they're boring, but maybe I just like brown. ... Does that mean I'm full of crap, too? Heh. |
